Both children and youth go through some physical changes when they grow up, which is why parents and teachers should guide them during this process. Young children mostly have questions about the difference between boys and girls and they want to know where babies come from. Older children have questions about puberty, their body, sexuality and relationships. Firstly, it is important that children get an answer to these questions. Secondly, it is important children have a positive feeling about their body, so they become more resilient and respect the limits of others.
According to research, puberty is an important period in life in which young people develop their identity. For example, they are looking for what they want in life. Results of the research show that gender stereotypes have an inhibiting influence on the identity development. It can prevent children from trying out certain activities, which leads them to being limited in their exploration. They are unconsciously pushed in a certain direction, so they miss opportunities to make choices based on their personality instead of the stereotypes.
I understand that this is a subject which is not easy to talk about. To make this easier and to make children comfortable enough to ask questions, you should give attention to a welcoming and accepting atmosphere. Here are some examples of how to do this:
- You can start with a team building game. You can find one in the PDF, but you’re free to do other games also.
- Working in small groups can be less intimidating. Groups of 3 or 4 children are recommended.
- Make clear that everything you talk about in class, stays in class.
- Make clear everyone has his or her own opinion and that it is ok.
- Make clear not everyone has to talk if they don’t want to.
- Make clear listening to each other is also important.
- Humor can be important when dealing with this subject. Sometimes it’s nice to make such a big subject smaller. On the other hand, laughing at somebody is not ok!
